Yay! a sunny day and as such we went to the zoo. My driving around thought today was that people here in Bristol seem to own either terriers, golden retrievers or giant breeds. There are so many more giant breeds here than at home but that could be because here it is cold enough to have breeds with lots of fur. I have also seen a few spaniels all of which look different to the spaniels we have at home.
So we arrived at the zoo and discovered it is nothing like it was when I was 4. They had similar animals to those found in the Adelaide zoo but often they were different species. For example their otters were about twice the size and they had golden headed tamerins instead of golden lion tamerins. They also were missing some animals. They had no bears, no tigers, and orangutans. However, they did have gentoo penguins with underwater viewing, lots of gorillas which were able to be viewed up close although the silverback definitly did not like my camera, a butterfly house, and a baby tapir. The best animal at the zoo was the pair of Okapi. For those of you unfamiliar with Okapi they are a relation of the giraffe. They are a bit smaller, brown with white zebra stripes on their rumps and legs. They are very shy, endangered and they live in the dense jungle. I had never thought I would see one in real life.
We also got to feed the rainbow lorikeets which although they are local to SA it was fun to feed them. I think I might get one when I move out as I have been considering a medium sized parrot for a while now.
Nick and I are going for a trip to wales tomorrow so I may not post for a while.

Twice in one day I hear about Okapi
Chris Daniels talked about them on the radio this morning
You don't want a lorikeet, they have really bad soggy poo that they spray EVERYWHERE. You can't just pick it up with a tissue like normal bird poo.
